Hang It Like It’s Hot

Oooookkkkaaay. So you have a blank wall. And you have some nice trivets. Why not put them on the wall? That’s what I did!

I bought these 3 trivets years ago. Actually, they came in a set. I had hung them up at my last house but when we moved here they went in a drawer. Recently I’ve been thinking that the corner of the kitchen needed something to balance the other side, which has 2 paintings.

Now with the trivets in place.

Me likey. Although the last time I had some black nails that were a little betta. I think I may try to get more of those. For the now the silver will do.

Wanna see them up close??

Yes, the 2 round ones are the same design. I just hung them differently so they’d be more interesting.

How about you? Hung anything interesting on your wall lately?

Getting Kitchy in the Kitchen

The dishwasher wasn’t the only addition I’ve done lately in the kitchen. I also added some “stuff” to the walls.

First up: wall decals. We have a large wall in the kitchen that is also a walkway. I wasn’t sure what I was going to put there because shelving is out (would be in the way while passing by). Sometimes I get into “decision paralysis” and then things sit foreva half done or not done at all. But when I was in Herberger’s last month, I came across some wall decals on clearance. I thought they would definitely add some visual interest and into my basket they went.

Before: plain wall.

After: decals up.

How it went down: I began by taping the sheets up using masking tape. I moved them around until I had them in just the right place.

Then I started putting them on the wall. I used a level (yes, I like to be precise) to get the first one situated. Then I used masking tape to put the others up. The width of the tape was just right.

Finally, all decals were up and ready for visual consumption.

They look good. For now. I like them well enough but will probably change them out at some point. I do really like having something there though versus a big blank wall.

Next up: hanging trivets as artwork.

Dishing It Out

You might not believe this, but…we’ve been living without a dishwasher for the entire time we’ve lived in Margo.

That’s right, this 1948 house was full fledged hand washing. With the addition of my little Mr. Guy and me at home more, doing dishes multiple times a day got to be a little much. And having people over for dinner, well let’s just say who really wants to volunteer to help clean when they know they might break a sweat?!

Anyway, what might be even more interesting (or not?) is that I haven’t really used a dishwasher since I left my Mom’s house after high school. I feel old saying that! Although my first few apartments did have them – I didn’t use them much (with one person it was so easy to clean as you go). But I haven’t had one in about 10 years – since grad school and moving to Minnesota. I had an older apartment in grad school and then moved into a duplex with lots of character when I first moved here to Minneapolis. When I bought my first house – it was built in the 1950′s and had the original kitchen (no dishwasher). Then we moved in to this wonderful place…with the original kitchen.

Luckily our cabinets were very easy to retrofit. All we had to do was relocate some dishes – the cabinet size was just about perfect.

Cue angels singing; the new dishwasher installed!

It’s a fabulous dishwasher. Very quiet and all sorts of other advantages, which I don’t really remember. My hubby was the one who did all the research. I just wanted it to clean dishes, so it worked for me! We got the stainless steel to go with the other appliances. Now someday when we do more of a reno in there, the appliances will be one thing we don’t have to worry about.

I don’t know if this is going to seem overly dramatic – but it has changed my life! True story. I can’t tell you how nice it is to only have to hand wash a couple things after meals. AND now we are down to one dish drainer so another benefit was opening up more counter space.

I would say that now I AM more inspired to do dishes.

Easter Brunch

Okay, so I’m a little delayed. But I’ve been out of town. Do I get some leeway? I’ll work on it!

Here are some shots of our Easter table. We had my husband’s parents and sister over for brunch. The base was a plain white tablecloth and then added touches to it. First, two vases of yellow flowers.

If you are wondering how I got them “bunched” – I just cut them so they would be at the tops of the vases and then used floral wire to tie them together. Because the wire is green, you can hardly see it. I also added a little flourish with some random ribbon I had around.

Then between those I added a bowl with some fake grass and put a sign in it. I couldn’t find the graphic I wanted – which was something that had both the Easter bunny and a nod to the religious occasion that it was. So I printed out a graphic I liked then added some text.

I printed it on card stock (2 up) and I used glue to put back and to back with toothpicks at the bottom so they would stick in the grass (I used tape for the toothpicks). I thought it needed a little more color, so set it on a square teal placement I had.

I also printed out a graphic that was meant to be a large card. I made it smaller and turned them into place cards. I hand wrote the names.

I also picked up a little gift to them from Evan and put those near their spots. Again finding a graphic online and then adding text to it.

The whole table came together nicely I thought.

And what’s Easter without candy of course? I put jelly beans in a fruit/dessert cup and put that in a large glass bowl with chocolate candy surrounding it.

Right before brunch we had an Easter egg hunt for the little guy.

The Easter bunny had arrived during the night and brought him a few other things – like a pinwheel, book and bucket/toys for digging in sand or dirt.

Of course it had a tag noting who it was for and who it was from!

He then enjoyed his eggs and other gifts for most of the afternoon.

It was a wonderful day spent with family!

Waiting for the Bunny…Hop

Decor is changing like a whirlwind around here. St. Patty’s Day – out – and Easter – in! Without further ado, here’s the do…

Let’s start with the mantle. Yes, switching it up! I had some glittery eggs in my stock pile of Easter decor. I just put those in a cute yellow bowl. Then I bought a couple of adorable ducks from one of my favorite re-purposed shops.

They add so much texture to the mantle! I also “lightened” up my candles (pillar candles out, tapers in).

Next was on to the buffet.

I did a repeat of last year’s decor: mosiac vase my Sister made me years ago with glittery eggs and a fake-moss bunny, then added a yellow egg bowl filled with fake rose petals.

Moving on…next came the dining table centerpiece. I dressed up a birds nest with eggs by putting it on top of a pedastal and covered with a cloche.

I put that on top of a slate cheese board that I had received for a gift. And all that sits atop a green place mat that I just purchased recently. I always do a centerpiece that can be easily moved, so the place mat was a must for no scratching!

We’re also hosting a small Easter brunch and I’ve got some ideas for that. But you’ll have to wait to see :)

How about you? Decorating for Easter too?

Quick Centerpiece

Just a quick post to remind you to use what you have for a quick centerpiece. We had a small informal dinner at the house recently and I wanted a quick, easy centerpiece (without running to the store for flowers). I had these ceramic leaf dishes that I thought would work well.

Then I got out some votive holders. (These have multiple uses, so go head and get your mulit-pack of 12. You won’t be sorry.)

But when I put them together they were missing “something.” Like a uniting piece. So, I found a rectangular platter that would fit all four of them.

That was definitely the ticket! So I took all of these

And created this

Ta-da! Nothing too complicated for sure, but they did do the trick of adding a small element to the table that ended up being packed with food, too. Plus they didn’t interrupt the line of sight AND they looked great after the dishes were cleared.

As it’s been said before by many a decorator – shop your house! And if you don’t have things to choose from, give yourself some permission to buy some pretty things. I’m not talking hoarding or anything (that would be very un-Feng Shui of me), just so you have some choices when the time comes.

St. Patty’s Day Decor

Happy Belated St. Patty’s Day from an Irishwoman. For reals. Can you say McCue? Yep, maiden name my friends. So pre-married with kids, I celebrated like no one’s business. But this year we just hung around the house. I did up a little decor (you knew I would!) for the occasion, however.

First I laid out all I had going on. I was going to try not to buy anything.

Then I played around. I layered the feathered boas and shamrock lei in the hurricane. Then added the beads to votive cups and just put the ribbon on the side.

I kept it that way for a couple days. But when I ran into Michael’s for something else, sparkly shamrocks and green hats called out to me, “Lisa, please buy us!” I answered the call with some green of my own and they were mine.

I put a couple of the shamrocks in the hurricane (liked that it added some height).

And took away the ribbon.

I then took a large vase, added some filler and a couple of hats and shamrocks to that.

And brought a little green vase with some fake leaves from downstairs to complete the addition to the mantle.

I had also purchased some confetti-ish stuff (?) and put that around the clock and added a couple of hats to the vase behind it.

Lastly, I put a sparkly shamrock on the gate.

It worked. I am thinking maybe next year I’ll do a little banner for the mirror. Maybe I could try one of my pinterest ideas. We shall see…otherwise, at least I’ve got this cutie hanging around. Best. Decor. Ever.

Dearest Margo

I remember being in junior high (?) when I heard my aunt Geri refer to “Harriet.” The context was such that I asked her “who” that was. She told me that it was her car – Harriet the Honda. She always named her cars. I thought that was pretty cool and thus started naming mine. Previous names included Betty the Buick, Sally the Sentra and now I drive Vera the Vue. My brothers named their’s too. If I remember correctly there was a Big Haas (Catalina) and Blacky (black truck) among them. It did make me start looking at my car differently.

Then when I started learning about and practicing Feng Shui, Carole Hyder really brought it home to me (yes, pun intended!) that naming your house is a great way to establish more of a connection. This wasn’t exactly new to me – I’ve heard of this, but for some reason hadn’t implemented it. Probably the biggest proponents that do this well are people with resort/vacation properties. It serves to distinguish “where” you are staying (Mermaid Haven versus 123 Beach Road).

With my first house I named it what I hoped it would be (something about health). To tell the truth, it never really “fit” and I didn’t use it that much. But I marked it off that I had named it. Then a couple years ago I read another book – Conversations with Your Home: Guidance and Inspiration beyond Feng Shui , that Carole had penned. This really opened my eyes to taking your relationship with your home to a new level. I hadn’t named my new house yet (the one I currently live in with my hubby and son), so it seemed a perfect opportunity.

This time I approached it differently. I wanted the house to tell me (or help determine) it’s name. I definitely think I was affected by a story in the book, but how it went it down was this: one night before I went to bed, I simply asked my house to let me know if they had a preferred name. I woke up in the middle of the night (3 a.m.ish) and heard “Margo, Margo, Margo!” I wasn’t quite sure what was happening, but then it occurred to me the house was “telling” me her name.

Later that morning I headed for the internet. I looked up popular names from the 40′s and 50′s (this house was built in 1948) and Margo was among them. It seemed right and continues to “fit” the house. Since then I often refer to “Margo” when talking about her (my house). It definitely is a more personal connection.

I encourage you, if you haven’t done so, to name your house. I recommend Carole’s book to get you on an even deeper relationship (whether you are in love – or not in love) with your house. I bet you’ll come away with a whole new appreciation for it.

Now, go forth and name! And let me know how it worked out. Or let us all know if you already have. I’d love to hear what the name is and how it came to be.

P.S. For any of you local peeps, I’m attending an event at Normandale that explores this in a little more depth. If interested, find info here: From House to Home. If you go, please find me to say “hello.” I’ll be soaking up info, just like you.

A Good Read

I just finished reading The Perfectly Imperfect Home by Deborah Needleman.

I got my copy from the library. There was a waiting list, but it was worth it. I have long been a fan of hers – she was editor in chief of Domino magazine. The book has some great info and tips for the DIY decorator. I enjoyed it immensely and would recommend it.

The only piece that totally bummed me out was an error in the bedroom section.

She writes, Facing Where: The Feng Shui-ers say the bed should not face the door, but if your bed is the prettiest thing in the room, why not see it when you walk in? If you’ve got a great view of the fireplace instead, then by all means, take their advice.”

Someone with Feng Shui knowledge did not proof this part of the book. Feng Shui-ers do not say that the bed should not face the door. Without getting too complicated and detailed, I can tell you that Black sect Feng Shui-ers (like myself) want you to face the door so that you can see it. It’s true that we don’t want your feet directly in line with the door – but if that is the only placement that makes sense, we can correct for it. And Compass Feng Shui-ers will have you place your bed so that you are facing a good direction. This may (or may not) mean that you are facing the door.

Although Feng Shui is becoming more and more mainstream (people at least know about it), it’s too bad when misinformation like this is published. Especially when it’s a popular book. It does make me wonder where she gathered that info.

I’ve heard many other “misnomers” about Feng Shui and it’s usually where someone said something offhand that was misinterpreted. And sometimes it’s not someone who even really knows that much about Feng Shui (e.g. someone who has read a book speaks like they are an expert).

There are lots of great Feng Shui books out there if you are interested. Check out the Tips, Resources & Reading tab above or my pinterest page for recommended reading. Or if you have a question, go ahead and ask me here or on facebook. It would be great to clear up any misconceptions.

At least we did agree on a few other things in that section. Like making the bedroom a room you love. Don’t save this room for “last” when decorating. Do it first. Do it NOW. This is such an important room – where you rejuvenate. Please be inspired by it!

Prunes ARE a Magical Fruit

Yes, I am totally cracking myself up over here with that title!

Okay, well this post is actually how I’ve created some unique artwork/greeting cards using pureed prunes and baby body parts. (Oh yes, I am doing it again – cracking up!) Okay, let’s get serious, shall we?

Last November I decided I wanted to make a cute Thanksgiving card using my son’s hand print. I wanted to end up with a turkey. I was in a conundrum because he wasn’t yet a year old and I wasn’t sure how it would fly. I tried to trace his hand – but he was having none of it. Then I had this thought to get a whole hand print. But I wanted to be safe. I didn’t want to use paint or an ink pad in case he tried to lick it and I didn’t have, nor want to buy, non-toxic paint.

Then it came to me: prunes!

I sat him in a chair, got out the prunes, “painted” his hand with a silicone brush and quickly (!) put his hand on a piece of paper. I also had a paper towel at the ready to wipe it off when were done. The bonus: he could eat the rest! It produced exactly what I was hoping for.

I let it dry overnight and then scanned it in. I printed off copies so that I could play around with making a turkey using crayons and then scanned the one I liked the best.

I added a few other elements (wording on the outside and inside) and sent it off.

So when Valentine’s day rolled around, I thought it would be fun to do something similar. This time, however, I was aiming for the feet. I did the same process and at first tried to have him stand on the paper. But he wouldn’t put his feet down. I guess he knew there was something on them and it didn’t feel right? So I sat him back in a chair and then pressed the paper to his feet (I did each foot independently). He didn’t much like it this time, so you can see he curled one of his big toes (below on the right). I tried to be really quick and wipe them off.

I let them dry (once again) and then scanned them in. I ended up tweaking them to make a heart.

I added a couple more embellishments to the card before sending it off.

Both cards were well received. (Disclaimer: most of the responders were biased – like grandparents and other family. I could probably send them lint or toe jam and they’d still be appreciative!)

Anyway, if you have (or someone you know has) a little one and want to capture their little hands and feet, you might try the prune method. Whether you are looking at them in person or on a card, they really are magical.
